A Pawsome Celebration: How to Throw the Perfect Birthday Party for Your Dog
Every day is great when you spend it with your furry friend, but your dog’s birthday demands a special celebration. Your canine companion has been there with you through thick and thin, so it only makes sense to make his birthday one to remember. Here’s what you can do to make sure your dog has a very special birthday party.
Make a Guest List
While you can have a great time celebrating alone with your dog, it’s not really a party unless you invite some other friends and family members to join the festivities. It’s also good to establish just how many guests will attend your pooch’s party – having an estimate of attendees will play a role when planning some other important details.
When it comes to figuring out the right two- and four-legged guests, think about just who your dog would like to see. If your best friend is a bit older and less energetic, you may not want to invite too many young pups or children who’ll want to run and play all day. Your dog may also love being the center of attention, so a big shindig with plenty of guests would be a perfect fit. It’s your dog’s special day, so tailor the guest list to his preferences to help make his birthday bash a big success.
Choose a Party Destination
Once you have your guest list set, it’s time to pick the perfect party place. The right spot can depend on a few different factors. If you have a lot of dogs coming to celebrate, you’ll want enough space to let them move around and play. You’ll also want to make sure there’s enough area so that everyone has enough room to maneuver, especially if you plan to party for more than an hour or two.
If it meets all the necessary criteria, your home can be a convenient birthday location. However, there are plenty of other spots where you can throw a great birthday bash.
- A friend or family member’s place
- A nearby park or beach
- A dog-friendly restaurant or pub
- Your dog’s daycare or pet store
Any of these places can make for a good gathering spot, but make sure to follow any rules or see if you need to book a certain space depending on your location. If your desired spot is outdoors, you may want to consider finding a place that has some cover or a nearby indoor spot in case your furry friend’s special day has some bad weather.
Have Supplies Ready
A celebration isn’t quite ready without some party supplies. Whether you decide to throw a themed celebration or a laid-back get-together, it’s good to have some goodies and events in place to help entertain the birthday dog and his guests. You can choose just how much you want to prepare for the party, but everything from some small snack to a kiddie pool full of balls is fair game. Here are some items you may want to have on hand:
- Some tasty dog treats
- Party hats or themed outfits for any dogs who don’t mind wearing clothing
- A variety of toys for impromptu bouts of playtime
- Some decorations to make your party more festive
- Small party favors for when guests depart
In addition to some of the more fun supplies, you’ll also want to have some other items prepared just in case they’re needed. Some doggy bags will be helpful to clean up after the dogs over the course of the party. Extra water and bowls are a must, especially on hot days. It’s also advised to have a first aid kit just in case there’s a small disagreement among your canine guests or if anything happens. The better prepared you are, the more likely everyone will have a good time during your dog’s special day.
Let Them Eat Cake (Made for Dogs, of Course)
A birthday just isn’t a proper celebration without some form of birthday cake. While your dog wouldn’t be able to partake in baked goods meant for humans, that doesn’t mean he can’t have some treats specifically made for him.
Your dog’s “cake” can take many forms. You can find a bakery or specialty store near you that can make a proper cake that’s safe for canine consumption. You can also attempt to make a cake, some cupcakes, or another tasty treat on your own – just make sure to avoid any ingredients that are unsafe your furry friend. If neither of those are quite up your alley, you can also celebrate with fancy snacks or a bowl of his favorite dog food to commemorate this momentous occasion.
Get Your Dog the Perfect Gift
Like cake, a true birthday celebration isn’t complete without a special gift or two. Your furry friend is always there for you, so it’s only right that you reward him with something he’ll love. Does he have a certain type of toy that drives him crazy (but in a good way)? Is your furry fellow in need of a new dog bed? You know your best friend better than anyone, so take some time to determine a true treat to help you close out his special day the right way.
Post-Party Relaxation
After all the excitement of a birthday bash, it’s important to take some time to cool down following such an eventful day. Once all the guests are gone and everything is put away, make sure to have some quality alone time with your precious pooch so the two of you can just chill out before bedtime – the two of you deserve it.
Birthdays are great, but there’s still plenty to do every other day of the year. Want to learn more about how to strengthen the bond between you and your best friend?
