8 Ways to Celebrate Pet Appreciation Week and Show Your Best Friend Extra Love
We know you adore your dog, and he or she undoubtedly knows it, too. But this week is the perfect time to go that extra mile for your furry friend. That’s because June 5-11 is Pet Appreciation Week, the ideal time to celebrate how much our pets mean to us. And there’s so much to celebrate!
Our pets love us unconditionally. They are loyal almost to a fault. They wait longingly for us to return home, and greet us with boundless energy and gratitude when we do. They even provide health benefits that have been scientifically proven. Numerous studies have shown that having pets can decrease your blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, create opportunities to socialize and exercise, and even boost your self-esteem.
So what can you do during Pet Appreciation Week to really show your dog how much you love him? Here are our eight ways to celebrate the week with your pooch.
1. Take him for a special grooming.
Treat him to a good washing and pedicure. You may even want to check for a doggie spa in your town – there are quite a few around that offer everything from basic grooming to massage, de-shedding treatments, mud masks and more.
2. Schedule some extra time with your dog.
Take a longer walk than usual. Extend your playtime routine. Visit your local dog park or take a hike in the woods. Any extra attention you can give your pooch will be greatly appreciated.
3. Go for a car ride.
You know your dog LOVES car rides. Take him for a ride with the windows down for some tongue-out, ears-flapping-in-the-wind fun!
4. Schedule your pet’s annual checkup at the vet.
Make sure he’s current on all his shots and is in good health. It’s one of the best gifts you can give your pet… and yourself!
5. Take your pooch to the beach.
If you live near a body of water that allows dogs, celebrate with some fun in the sun! Not all dogs are water-lovers, but many are. If yours is one of those that can’t get enough swim time in, grab that Frisbee and some water toys and beach-bum it together!
6. Learn how to give a doggie massage.
A muscle massage can do wonders for your dog by reducing anxiety, aiding digestion, relieving muscle tension and stiffness, and improving circulation. Massage can even help reduce pain and swelling in joints and muscle tissue. There are a number of ways to learn how to massage your fur baby online, so get those fingers searching now so they can soothe your pet later.
7. Play “nose games.”
Stimulate your dog’s incredible sense of smell by playing “nose games.” This is a particularly good idea for a rainy day. Hide treats around the house and teach your dog to “find.” Put a treat in one hand and have your dog pick the hand with the treat in it. A quick search online can put you in touch with more “nose game” ideas.
8. Go on a shopping spree.
Take your pooch to a dog-friendly store and stock up on healthy treats, like these wholesome treats from Bil-Jac. While you’re there, buy him a new leash or toy. Make it a day to remember!
