Bil-Jac has been making dog food since 1947, giving us almost 75 years of nutritional expertise. As a result, we hear from consumers every day. While some people offer notes of love or share photos of their adorable furry friends, others ask important questions about what’s best nutritionally for their dogs.
Some questions arise more often than others. We've selected our seven most common questions to share some helpful dog food facts with you.
Why Do I Need to Get a Super Premium Dog Food?
Compared to some less expensive brands of food, you may feed your best friend up to a 1/3 less food by volume with a super-premium dog food like Bil-Jac. Your dog will enjoy the better nutrition, outstanding health, unbelievable taste, and may not need to visit the vet as often!
Is One Type of Protein Better Than Others for My Dog?
Real chicken and chicken organ meat are among the most nutritious sources of protein for your dog. When making Bil-Jac Dry Dog Food, we start with fresh, never frozen, chicken, sourced ourselves and made in our own facilities; we have the utmost confidence in the quality of our ingredients. We know of no other dry dog food that actually tells you how much real fresh meat is used to make their food.
How Important Are Grains in Dog Food?
Grains are very important to a dog’s diet. Grains provide carbohydrates, which help to give your dog energy and supply fiber to promote digestion. At Bil-Jac, one of the selected wholesome grains we use is corn. When cooked properly, corn provides the highest total of antioxidant activity compared to rice, wheat or oats. Corn can also contain essential nutrients like linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid.
What Should I Look for in a Puppy Formula?
During the first year of their life, most puppies grow to full size, so feeding them high-quality puppy food is key! Look for small kibble that's easy to chew and digest. Choose the recipe that is made for the appropriate size of your dog.
What is Beet Pulp?
Beet pulp is an excellent source of fiber and a prebiotic that helps support healthy digestion. The pulp is white (not red) and contains no sugar. For dogs with sensitive stomachs, Bil-Jac Sensitive Solutions is an excellent choice.
Should I Worry About Food Allergy or Food Processing?
True food allergies in dogs are very rare. It isn't necessarily an ingredient that causes sensitive reactions. How ingredients are processed is likely more important, as almost all dry foods that are manufactured in large batches and cooked quickly under high pressure at high temperatures can damage key nutrients. That’s why we use our Nutri-Lock cooking method to slow-cook small batches of food before gently drying them. Slow-cooking and gentle drying help to protect the key nutrients your dogs need to get from their diet each day.
How Should I Select a Reduced Fat Formula?
Reduced fat dog food formulas should taste good to successfully help your best friend achieve and maintain a healthy weight. It can be helpful to choose a formula that is lower in fat, and provides high quality protein, like chicken. Be sure to use the Feeding Recommendations as a starting point and measure your dog’s food each day. Adjust the feeding amount based on your dog’s body condition and activity level.
