Exercise Needs

Shibas should be exercised daily to help with their high energy levels.

Grooming Needs

Shibas shed in large amounts twice a year. Infrequent brushing is okay (as long as it is not a long coat). Brushing and combing are helpful during periods of large shedding. Shibas are known to object to nail trimming so starting a puppy early is great.

History

Shiba Inus are an ancient hunting breed translated to “brushwood dog”. They were originally bred to hunt small game and birds. Shibas were brought to the United States in 1954 by a military family. These dogs are related to the Akita, Chow Chow, Kyushu and Spitz types.
